A blockbuster new Cabernet blend from Hestan Vineyards. Usually only available to mailing list members we have a small amount of this tiny production Cabernet while our allocation lasts!
Brix26 Inside Scoop: "Stephanie Cabernet comes from relative Napa Valley newcomer Hestan Vineyards, who are turning out some great high-end wines. The Stephanie Cabernet has quietly become one of our top-selling Cabernets over the last 3 vintages for good reason: its got all the hallmarks of a "classic" California Cabernet: plenty of rich berry fruit and that dusty tannin; not a wimpy Cab and not a giant fruit bomb. If you're a Cab-lover, Stephanie should be next on your wish list. Every time a customer calls and asks what new Cabernet we recommend, we'll send them Stephanie and 9 times out of ten they reorder a case!"

New release!
The sixth vintage of Dave Phinney's Disciples Red under the Crane Assembly label, the 2019 has arrived. The new Prisoner! Limited.
previous vintage 93 Points Robert Parker: "A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 13% Charbono, 6% Grenache and 5% Petite Sirah, the Disciples Red is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with gorgeous notions of hoisin, Black Forest cake, prunes and potpourri with hints of black pepper, unsmoked cigars and cloves. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and oh-so-spicy, it fills the palate with decadent fruit and a plush texture, finishing with a lively lift."
From the new winery The Crane Assembly, the Disciples Red has quite a back story. In August of 2012, four friends (Dave Phinney, Darryl Browman, Kevin A. Fox and Bryan D. Sandoli) stood in the middle of a block of hundred year old Zinfandel. The vineyard was planted by George Beldon Crane in the late nineteenth century and is one of the icons of the Napa Valley. Hours earlier they had signed the paperwork to buy the vineyard and it was just in the nick of time...they picked the grapes the next morning. Since that first year wines were made from our G.B. Crane Vineyard under the el Coco label and the GB Crane label.

New release from Paso cult producer Booker Vineyards. A fantastic value!
94 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "As to the reds, the 2019 Harvey and Harriet can be thought of as the more approachable, lush red in the lineup, and it always seems more black fruit-driven than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackberries, sweet tobacco, cedar, and some floral violet nuances define the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful texture and silky tannins. It’s a smoking value, and while it has plenty of up-front charm, it certainly has a decade or more of overall longevity....the releases are made by Eric Jensen and there are two cuvees, the Harvey and Harriet and the flagship My Favorite Neighbor. Both are brilliant wines, and as I wrote in one of the reviews, they would cost 2-3 times their going rate if they were from Napa Valley."
94 points Robert Parker: "Deep ruby-purple, the 2019 Harvey & Harriet has beguiling crushed red and black cherries, tar, coffee beans and dark spicy and savory accents on the nose. Full-bodied but light on its feet and easy to drink, it offers a fine balance of powerful fruit intensity and seamless freshness, a style that will appeal to a wide range of red-wine drinkers, from lovers of Zinfandel to fans of Cabernet."

Screaming Eagle winemaker's new red!
A great new Napa Red from former Screaming Eagle Winemaker Andy Erickson and vineyard manager Anne Favia, Napa's newest superstar winemaking team. A fantastic value for such pedigree and quality under $50. Limited.
94 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Always a great value, the Leviathan California Red Wine is a Bordeaux blend put together by Andy Erickson. The wine reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as complex notes of red and black fruits, green tobacco, cedary spice, and spring flowers. These all flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that offers good overall concentration, seamless tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the style of the 2018 vintage with its more streamlined, elegant style, it’s going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age (although it’s far from unapproachable today) and keep for a solid 10-12 years or more. This is one of the more age-worthy examples of this cuvée that I recall."
93 Points James Suckling: "Blackberry and asphalt aromas with some violets and rose petals. Medium to full body. Some carbon to the dark fruit. Tasty and delicious. Chewy now, but we like it already. Drinkable now, but will improve with age."
previous vintage 94+ Points Robert Parker: "From winemaker Andy Erickson, Leviathan is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot aged in 25% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with exuberant black cherries, black raspberries and blackcurrants with hints of pencil shavings, black pepper, tobacco and forest floor plus a waft of tapenade. Full, firm and grainy, with gorgeous mid-palate generosity and packed with layers of black fruit and savory sparks, it has a rock-solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Approachable now yet structured to cellar, this seriously affordable, serious California blend should age 15-20 years or more."
San Francisco Chronicle: "New Cult Wineries to Watch: Leviathan": "If Andy Erickson is normally low key, he's almost mum about this blend...but for his devotees, it's a chance to access the Screaming Eagle winemaker's talents for under $50 - far less than most of his projects, which also include Hartwell and Arietta...features the joint talents of his wife, Annie Favia, one of Napa Valley top viticulturists."

New release of the fantastic new Abstract Red from Orin Swift. Limited new release.
previous vintage 94 Points Robert Parker: "The absurdly delicious Proprietary Red Blend Abstract comes from multiple AVAs: Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Amador and El Dorado and is a blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah and Syrah aged 10 months in 30% new French oak. This is a beauty and a great price for a wine of this quality. The wine has an opaque ruby/purple color, gorgeous nose of creosote, kirsch liqueur and cassis with a touch of licorice, Provençal herbs and pepper. Delicious, full-bodied, unctuously textured, thick and juicy, this mouth-filling, big wine cuts a broad swath across the palate, but is never hot or awkward. Best drunk in its first 5-6 years. It finished at 15.7% natural alcohol."
Abstract is a blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards in Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Mendocino. The aromas are all berry and black fruits, with neatly integrated caramelized oak. A huge entry coats the mouth. The wine has tons of weight on the mid-palate and is dense with layers of ripe cherry and strawberries. The finish is laced with long, soft tannins that go on and on. Inspired by the wines Dave Phinney tasted in the Pyrénées-Orientales over the past two years, in this mountainous outpost of France’s Roussillon region, Dave started his own small winery. He wanted to make something from similar varietals (back here at home) that you can open and enjoy every day.

New release of Caymus' Napa Cabernet now available! Caymus makes one of Napa Valley's most popular Cabernet Sauvignons and the 2020 is another stellar wine.
previous vintage 94 Points Robert Parker: "The Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has a dense opaque purple color, a kiss of blackberry and cassis fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel with ripe tannin and a long finish. It is very Caymus in its immediate accessibility, but has plenty of staying power and depth. This is lush, full, intense and pure. Drink it over the next 15 or so years."
Caymus Vineyards produces two Cabernets Sauvignons – a “Napa Valley” and the venerable “Special Selection”. Both Cabernet bottlings have aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through “hang time” – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to “hang” on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes. The wines are abundant in textural tannins yet soft as velvet. Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices. Caymus Cabernets offer a wide array of aromas and flavors including cocoa, cassis and vanilla. The new Caymus 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley release is one of the best cabs in years!

New Opus One Overture now available. Limited.
Overture is the second wine of Opus One. Until now, this wine has been only available at the winery and a few select restaurants! Limited.
Overture" is Opus One's homage to the Bordeaux blend. Varietals are blended across multiple vintages to achieve a final non-vintage wine that is complex and elegant.. Made exactly like the Opus One and sourced from the same estate vineyards, the Overture too is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon making up around 70%. Aged in French oak, Overture is comprised of the five classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Full bodied but approachable in its youth, Overture shows generous dark fruit aromas and flavors with a soft, supple mid-palate. As a fine wine, Overture will develop beautifully over time.
In keeping with the tradition of many great Bordeaux estates, Opus One produces a fine second wine called Overture. Since 1993, Overture has been crafted as a part of our relentless pursuit of quality for Opus One. Every acre of our estate vineyard is farmed with the attention to detail and singular focus required to produce Opus One. Nevertheless, in any given year, not all of the parcels from our estate are selected for the final blend of Opus One. When these wine lots are afforded additional time in barrel, in combination with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine achieves a remarkable elegance and complexity that represents a superb expression of our estate. This is Overture.

Brand new release from Orin Swift and one of his best ever! Extremely limited.
previous vintage 96 Points Robert Parker: "The Proprietary Red Blend Machete finished at 15.7% natural alcohol and is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache aged 10 months in 40% new French oak. This wine is telltale opaque bluish/purple with a super nose of barbecue meat and herbs, blackberries, blueberries, white flowers and sweet, dark raspberries in the background. The wine has fabulous texture, great intensity, full-bodied power (15.7%), and a long, long finish. It is a killer effort and like the Abstract, probably best drunk in its first 5-6 years of life because of its charm."
Machete is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Petite Sirah may be winemaker Dave Phinney’s favorite grape varietal and wine . He has been growing and making it since the 2000 vintage. Massive and powerful with instense color and structure, a limited release Petite Sirah blend called “Machete” was launched in 2009. The label concept has been two years in the making, and is decidedly unique in its various formats.

The new vintage of Silver Oak's iconic Alexander Valley Cabernet now available!
The Silver Oak 2018 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of 94.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4.2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. After blending in early 2019, the 2018 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was transferred to American oak barrels from the wineries cooperage, The Oak, where it aged for 18 months. Blending before barrel aging—a signature of our winemaking style—allows blends to be based on the inherent qualities of their vineyard components before oak influence. Vintage to vintage, the resulting Cabernets emerge integrated and ready to drink upon release.

New release of the Domaine Eden Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains from Mount Eden winery - one of the best buys in Pinot Noir this year.
95 Points Wine Enthusiast **#9 in the Enthusiast 100 of 2016** and an *Editors' Choice*: " While this wine’s Mount Eden sister bottling may better stand the test of time, the Domaine Eden Pinot Noir is what most people will most like to drink right now, and it’s cheaper too. Aromas of dried violets, uncrushed boysenberries and pencil lead make for an ethereal nose that seems to hold secrets one must uncover. Precise tannins on the palate offer floral yet savory flavors of black sesame, nori, violet and mulberry. It’s mellow yet mysterious."
93 Points Robert Parker: "A fabulous introduction to the Domaine Eden Pinot Noir is flat-out beautiful in the way it captures the essence of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the house style. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and herbs caress the palate. There is a purity of fruit that is stunning in its beauty. Partial use of whole clusters (20%) gives the wine much of its fragrance, but ultimately the Domaine Eden bottling is all about class. At $35 it represents one of the very finest buys in Pinot Noir from anywhere, including the hallowed vineyards of Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020."

The Groth 2018 Cabernet hits on all cylinders. Consistently one of the benchmark wines of the Napa Valley. Another Napa Classic!
94 Points Wines & Spirits: "Cameron Parry found his cabernet vines ripened their fruit in 2018 at Brix levels that were lower than usual, sustaining acidity in the grapes. They produced a young and luscious Oakville cabernet, the wine integrating oak and fruit tannins in a way that supercharges its flavors. Rather than weighing the wine down, the structure empowers it, presenting plummy blue fruit, scents of cassis and fruity-umami notes of mushrooms that last, gracious, gentle and refined."
93 Points Wine Enthusiast "Editor's Choice": "Blended with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, this Cabernet opens with earthy aromas of tar, sage and cedar. It expands on the palate to show an elegant structure of finessed, supple tannins alongside layers of clove and cinnamon atop ripe red and black berries."
92 Points Wine Spectator: "A hint of singed savory leads off, turning quickly to a core of raspberry and mulberry fruit, lined with alluring tea, sanguine and iron notes. Offers fine-grained grip and should unwind nicely in the cellar."
Groth Winery sits on the 121-acre Oakcross Vineyard planted by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan of Silver Oak in the heart of the Oakville appellation. This prime Cabernet Sauvignon land serves owner Dennis Groth and winemaker Michael Weis well as they fashion some of Napa Valley's best Cabernets.

From esteemed Napa Winemaker, Benoit Touquette, the 2016 Arbalest Bordeaux Rouge is one of the best buys in Red Bordeaux we've discovered! A fruit-forward wine oozing juiciness and deep, dark flavors. On the nose, the slight scent of cedar and truffle tell you it’s predominantly Merlot.
91 Points Robert Parker: "Here's a seriously fun Bordeaux wine that offers jaw-dropping great value, made by French native, Napa super-star winemaker Benoit Touquette. The 2016 Arbalest is a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The Petit Verdot and the Cabernet Sauvignon come from the Left Bank. I’m not allowed to tell the name of the Château, but it’s in the Saint-Estèphe area. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc come from the Right Bank, where the soil is clay-limestone on limestone rock, with a southwest exposure. Medium garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the gate with notes of warm black plums, Black Forest cake, licorice and candied violets plus hints of fallen leaves and cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black fruit, framed by ripe rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy."
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the best values in Bordeaux out there, the 2016 Arbalest comes from a mix of the Right and Left Banks and is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it has classic notes of black cherries, leafy herbs, chocolate, and damp earth. With nicely integrated acidity, fine tannins, and a beautiful sense of purity paired with plenty of richness, it's a no-brainer purchase to enjoy over the coming decade."

Shatter is a delicious collaboration between Dave Phinney (Orin Swift Cellars) and Joel Gott. Highly recommended.
Shatter comes from the small town of Maury in the Roussillon region of France. The hillside grenache vines were planted over 60 years ago in black schist, a slate-like, rocky soil common to the area. Though nutrient-poor, it retains heat well, allowing the slow-ripening grenache to reach full maturity through cool nights. Tough soil, strong winds and hot days push the vines and cause shatter, or coulure, in the grape clusters, naturally thinning fruit from the vines and producing more intensely concentrated flavors. After harvest, the fruit was cold-soaked for 30 days to help further concentrate the wine, then fermented and aged at Dave's winery in Maury.
previous vintage 92 Points Robert Parker: "A collaboration between Napa's Joel Gott and Dave Phinney, the semi-opaque Cotes Catalanes Grenache is a smoking blend of 100% Grenache that comes from the singular, black schist soils located around the village of Maury, in the Agly Valley in the Roussillon. Aged in French oak (a small part being new) and hitting 15.6% natural alcohol, this sexy, full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal effort bears plenty of resemblance to the old-vine, 100% Grenache efforts coming from Chateauneuf du Pape. Kirsch liqueur, blackberry, toasted spice, garrigue and hints of vanilla bean all flow nicely to a seamless, silky, yet decadently styled red that has fine tannin, and a blockbuster, heady finish. It will certainly not appease those looking for lightweight aromas and flavors, but count me a fan. The oak is still present, so give it a year in bottle; it will drink nicely for another 5-6 years."

New release from Paso cult producer Booker Vineyards. As always, limited.
96+ Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The My Favorite Neighbor Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly deep purple/ruby-hued and has slightly more red fruits with lots of black raspberry, cassis, toasted spice, unsmoked tobacco, and incense aromas and flavors. It almost has a Margaux-like perfume and is medium to full-bodied, seamless, and wonderfully balanced on the palate. Some chalky minerality comes through with time in the glass, and it has plenty of tannins and a great finish. It’s not an over-the-top blockbuster and impresses just as much for its elegance as its richness"
96 points Robert Parker: "Blended with a bit of Syrah and Petit Verdot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep ruby-purple color and an alluring fragrance of cassis, violet, aniseed, bitter chocolate and coffee beans. It's notable this vintage for Goldilocks ripeness and seamless lift, offering a chocolate-like texture and very long finish...As I've commented in the past, the wines from Eric Jensen at Booker are some of the most impressive releases coming out of California. While in the past, they relied on pure fruit and texture to impress, today they possess layered, elegant and complex characters paired with serious depth, richness and structure."
The 2019 My Favorite Neighbor features a complex nose of red cherry, current and raspberry along with wild herbs, violets, and just a hint of toasted marshmallow. On the palate, generous flavors of black cherry, ripe plum, and fig compote is joined by notes of medium roast coffee and creme brulee. The extremely long and mineral finish is characterized by a hefty structure and luxurious, silky tannins.
An homage to Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Winery became an obsession. Sourced from exceptional vineyard sites around Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and south to Edna Valley, this wine is cultivated meticulously by the farmers who have become My Favorite Neighbors. With their dedication to the land, we are able to craft a world class wine without any shortcuts or compromises. Welcome to our Neighborhood. 2019’s abundant winter rain and a long, moderate growing season allowed for extended hang times and exceptional fruit quality.

A fantastic Napa Cabernet from Turnbull Cellars. Highly recommended.
90 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is deep, fleshy and a real delight. Inky dark fruit, cloves, licorice, lavender and chocolate are all kicked up in this juicy, flamboyant Napa Valley Cabernet. Pretty floral and savory notes perk up the finish. The Napa Valley Cabernet is gorgeous in 2019. Even better, it should be a tremendous value."
Made from all estate fruit from the Fortuna, Leopoldina, and Amoenus Vineyards, the Turnbull Napa Valley Cabernet is a great introduction to the Turnbull Winery. Winemaker Peter Heitz is garnering great acclaim for the work he's been doing at this small production facility, and it shows in this bottle. Of the vintage, Heitz says: “This wine captures the essence of where we farm in the Napa Valley. A wine of integrity, it’s a blend that we make to share at our own family table. A quintessential dirt to bottle wine that’s approachable at release and downright delicious."
Robert Parker: "...Readers should check out Turnbull Wine Cellars without delay."

New release of Caymus' under-the-radar Malbec from Argentina. Limited.
Beautiful Argentina is legendary in the production of fine Malbec wine. Inspried to create Red Schooner, Caymus Vineyards designed an efficient method to ship grapes over ocean waters while retaining their precious qualities. The plan was to pinpoint a high-caliber vineyard on the slopes of the Andes Mountains, then harvest and chill the fruit, transporting the valuable cargo by sea voyage to Caymus Vineyards. The fruit arrived in excellent condition, looking as though it had just been harvested. They used great care to extract deep color and rich tannins through a slow and delicate fermentation. The wine was then aged 14 months in French oak barrels (50% new) before bottling.
Tasting Notes: A "Caymus style" of Mendoza Malbec. Definitely an iron fist in a velvet glove. Rich fine tannin - a Mendoza dust fine texture. There is a very refined character to this wine, which is special and singular. This wine is unfined and has already thrown a bit of sediment, representing the rich and natural concentration of abundant quality.

Fantastic new Zinfandel from Hendry!
94 Points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a spicy, sublime and expansive wine, full bodied no doubt, yet brimming in freshness and complexity. It is red-fruit driven and dazzles in white and black pepper, accented by dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg. It has a long-lasting texture and richness."

All of the Hendry wines are made with estate fruit, and blocks 7 and 22 are located on the benchlands west of the city of Napa. Block 7 was planted in 1975 and block 22 was planted in 1995.

Laura Catena, proprietor of Luca Winery, is a fourth generation vintner, who also happens to be a Harvard and Stanford educated emergency medicine physician. Following the birth of her first child, Luca, she felt compelled to create a legacy of small production Argentine wines. The Luca Old Vines Malbec is from fruit grown in the Uco Valley, and is, in typical Luca style, a big, broad shouldered, structured powerhouse of a wine.
93 Points Robert Parker: "Fom new plantings in Gualtallary, the Luca Malbec has increased the proportion of fruit coming from this cool place to make it approximately a 50/50 blend of Malbec fruit from Gualtallary and La Consulta, both in the Valle de Uco. There is a big jump in precision and harmony along with more freshness and elegance. The expansive palate has great depth and fruit with very good freshness. This could well be the best vintage of Luca Malbec and I think the best might be yet to come, as the new vineyard matures...Luca is the personal project of Laura Catena."
93 Points James Suckling: "Beautiful aromas of blackberry, black licorice and spice follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a blueberry, dark chocolate and light nut aftertaste. Drink or hold."

A blockbuster new red from new discovery Herman Story winery - get on the bandwagon now while it's still available.
previous vintage 96 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Herman Story Nuts & Bolts checks in as 100% Syrah from a mix of vineyards that spent 18 months in 85% new French oak. This cuvée always delivers the goods. The 2018 sports a deep purple color, rocking Syrah notes of blackberries, ground pepper, smoked meat, and roasted meat, full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and silky yet present tannins. This pleasure-bent, sexy, yet pure, balanced Syrah can be enjoyed any time over the coming 7-8 years. It's the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted".
95 Points Wine Enthusiast: "Incredibly dark in color and intense in aromas, this bottling is lush with concentrated blackberry, black currant, charred wood and a hint of coffee on the nose. On the palate, firm yet polished tannins uphold dense flavors of black cherry, roasted black currant and plum, cola, espresso bean and cracked pepper. Acid washes into the finish."
Robert Parker: "One of my favorite estates in the Central Coast is Russell From's Herman Story, who makes unapologetic rich, layered, flavor loaded wines that are a joy to drink."

A fantastic value
New wine from Dominio de Pingus who make the legendary Pingus Red. A fantastic value!
94 Points Robert Parker: "The unbottled sample of the 2020 PSI feels young, juicy, very fruit-driven and clean. 2020 was an unusual vintage, first of all because of COVID-19, but it was a year with lots of light, plenty of flowers and a beautiful spring. They were able to harvest quite early and finished two days before the abundant rains (except in Soria, which is a different story) that started on the 20th of September. In Ribera, there will be two different harvests: the wines before the rain and those from after. So, this is very healthy, aromatic and floral, with a spark of freshness but also ripe and round. It's going to be a crowd-pleaser. It has a bright ruby color, with some 10% Garnacha. It somehow has less Tempranillo character."
Having established Pingus as a new benchmark for greatness in Spanish wine, Peter Sisseck has embarked on a new quest: to produce a wine that captures the soul of Ribera del Duero. And he intends to do so by harnessing the passion of the region’s growers who have, for far too long, lacked the tools, capital, and vision to make wine that is truly “theirs.” And thus PSI was born.
It is a Utopian idea, born of Peter's passionate belief in organic and biodynamic farming as well as his gratitude to the region for giving a young Danish winemaker the opportunity to make arguably Spain's most coveted wine.

Very limited Turley Zinfandel.
93 Points Wine Spectator "Best Buy": "Plump and zesty, this red is both fruit-forward and multilayered, featuring briary black cherry, licorice and toasty
sage flavors that fan out on the long, vibrant finish. Drink now through 2030."
93 Points Robert Parker: "The Turley Zinfandel Old Vines has a medium ruby-purple color and bright, inviting red and blue berry fruits laced with notes of apricot and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, the palate is silky, soft, super fresh and approachable with understated but pure fruit character. Lovely!"
91 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Turley Zinfandel Old Vines is laced with the essence of black cherry, plum, spice, leather and licorice. Deep and juicy, but in the mid-weight style of the year, the 2019 hits all the right notes. The Old Vines is a blend of 26 different sites. Best of all, it's a steal at $35 a bottle."
...One of California's great wineries, Larry Turley's Turley Wine Cellars continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the Golden State's viticultural heritage, saving old, head-trained and sometimes own-rooted vineyards from destruction. With fully 29 different bottlings, Zinfandel (often complemented by small amounts of other co-planted varieties, such as Carignan and Grenache) is the standard-bearer here, though Turley also does a fantastic job with other varieties, most obviously Petite Syrah. Given how distinctive each of the single-vineyard bottlings is, it's tempting to suggest (though some will no doubt think it heretical) that Zinfandel might be the variety best adapted to expressing "terroir" in California."
