93+ Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Pouring a deep magenta/ruby hue, the Walter Hansel 2022 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane Vineyard is ripe but has wonderful purity throughout and was raised the same way as the other reds, with 24% new French oak. On the nose, it is ripe with toasty spice, spiced plum, black cherries, menthol, and rosemary. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate and expands, with a ripe feel, but it retains good balance and is a decadent wine with a lot to offer over the next 6-8 years. 387 cases were produced."
Cahill Lane Pinot Noir: A blend of 3 separate acres surrounding the Hansel home. It consists of one acre of Rochioli Pommard clone, one acre of clone 115 and one acre of clone 114.
...“Pricing is important to me,” says Steven Hansel. “In the marketplace, most people treat wine like a commodity—if people are willing to pay $100, that’s what it’s sold for—without any relation to what it actually costs to make. If we’re going to get young people to drink wine, they can’t pay those prices. I believe young people would like to enjoy wine, but they don’t have the resources. So, why are we raising prices? If we charge too much, they’ll buy tequila or something else—and then we’re all out of a job.” An astute observation. The Hansel wines, besides being delicious, provide excellent value. Bravo!"
