93 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2022 Petite Sirah Royal Punishers is all varietal that spent 15 months in 35% new French oak. Ripe black fruits, graphite, peppery herbs, and some meaty, chocolate nuances all soar from the glass, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It should have a decade of solid drinking."
Robert Biale has become one of California's preeminent producers not only of Zinfandel, but also of Petite Sirah. The Robert Biale Royal Punishers Petite Sirah has an intense deep, dark blue/black color profile. Aromas of plum, quince, violets, figs, molasses, caramel and marbled rye awaken the nose. The entry is soft and weighty, then builds into a broad mid palate structure which has layers of ripe, black fruit flavors. The tannins are mouthwatering and medium grained which hold the fruit profile and carry a long, lingering finish.
Petite Sirah was the most commonly planted grape in Napa Valley for nearly a century. It was a favorite grape among winemakers looking to amplify underpowered wines in need of deep fruit, color, and structure. Its natural versatility made it a great counterpart to all red varieties, including Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, we are witnessing a resurgence and deep appreciation for this historic variety. Known for its dark color, firm structure, and deep black and blue fruit flavors, it’s perfectly suited to Napa’s moderate and arid growing season. In the Royal Punishers, Robert Biale makes one of our favorite Petite Sirahs anywhere in California.
