95 Points - new
One of Paso Roble's up-and-coming Superstars. Turtle Rock is a new label from Don Burns, assistant winemaker at SAXUM. Limited.
95 Points Robert Parker: "A commanding yet understated beauty, I found the 2022 Maturin James Berry Vineyard to be a centerpiece of the Turtle Rock lineup. Its beamingly powerful yet fragrant nose combines myriad dark fruit aromas with fresh herbs, black licorice and savory, meaty notes with time in the glass. The palate is similarly plush yet bright, with a deceptively nuanced finish of refined tannins that unwind and widen slowly but ceaselessly, framed with a lovely floral lift. This wine comprises 40% Graciano, 30% Mataro, 20% Syrah and 10% Grenache from the James Berry Vineyard and was aged in 100% new Cavin barrels."
...There are few estates in California today that are more exciting than Don Burns’ Turtle Rock. Pulling from some of the top vineyards on the westside of Paso Robles and making the wines as Justin Smith’s Saxum estate, Burns has consistently produced some of the wines of the vintage since his first releases in 2014. As I wrote in the past, readers interested in finding the next up and coming superstar in Paso Robles need to put Don and Claudia Burns’ Turtle Rock estate at the top of their list."
