A great wine from France's Rhone Valley.
The 2023 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is an elegant, full-bodied Southern Rhône blend (75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault). It features vibrant red and black fruit, peppery herbs, and licorice. It pairs well with rich stews, game, and hard cheeses.
95 Points James Suckling: "An attractive, layered, velvety and poised Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of cherries, strawberries, dried herbs, tar and baking spices. It's full-bodied with fine tannins. Succulent and well composed. There’s elegance here, yet it has character and structure. It's in control, seductive and flavorful with a long finish."
94 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Deeper ruby-hued and semi-opaque, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape reveals ultra-classic aromatics of ripe black cherries, peppered meats, garrigue, lavender, and sandalwood nuances. Based on 75% Grenache, 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, it was partially destemmed, vinified in concrete tanks, and aged 12 months in large foudre. It's medium-bodied and has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This plays in the more charming, forward style of the vintage yet has everything in the right place, with flawless balance, and it’s just loaded with charm and character. Drink 2025-2045....As I’ve written many times, Le Vieux Donjon is a reference point estate for classically made Châteauneuf du Pape. Their Châteauneuf du Pape comes from a mix of terroirs and is always a majority Grenache with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, partially destemmed, with the élevage in a mix of concrete tanks and large foudre. In addition to their red, they make a terrific Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc.
About the winery: Le Vieux Donjon was established in 1979 between Lucien and Marie-José Michel, whose parents each owned vineyards in the region prior to their marriage. Upon the marriage of Lucien and Marie-José, those within the families combined to form what is now known as Le Vieux Donjon. The winery itself is made up of fourteen hectares of organic parcels, containing both red and white grapes. The vineyards are filled with incredibly old vines (as much as 80yrs), which they only pick from once the grapes have achieved perfect ripeness. Lucien and Marie-Jose’s daughter, Claire, also joined the team in 2008. Lucien and Claire work together to destem (only when necessary), or pass the fruit directly into cement tanks to begin the fermentation process. The wine is then pumped downstairs into foudres and left to age 18-20 months.
