New Washington State Red from the folks at Cakebread!
Mullan Road Cellars is a journey into Washington winemaking led by Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars. Drawn by the high quality of wines and the camaraderie of the Walla Walla wine community, Dennis and winemaker Aryn Morell worked with the famed Seven Hills Vineyard on the southern edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation as well as vineyards in the soon-to-be-recognized Royal Slope appellation to craft this powerful yet elegant Bordeaux-style Red Blend.
90 Points Robert Parker: "While the 2013 Columbia Valley Red Wine showed better from barrel than bottle, it's still an outstanding effort. The focus with this cuvee is always higher elevation sites with the goal to make a fresh, elegant wine. Checking in as a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec, it has a classic Cabernet perfume of crème de cassis, spring flowers, sappy underbrush and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, balanced and elegant on the palate, drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Cakebread Cellars 2013 Vine Hill Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. Cakebread utilizes traditional fermentation techniques with the Vine Hill fruit to ensure complete extraction of its deep color, intense flavors and smooth, ripe tannins. Once fermentation begins, the juice is drained from one tank to another, allowing the skins in the first tank to fall to the bottom, only to be thoroughly re-macerated once the juice is splashed back into the tank, a technique known as rack-and-return. In addition to extracting more color and flavor, the aeration this technique affords converts short-chain (harsh) tannins to long-chain (suppler) tannins. After an extended maceration, the wine is gently drained from the skins and the free run juice transferred to French oak barrels. The skins are then pressed, and the resulting ‘press fraction’ kept separate
Rare Reserve Cabernet - 94+
New release of Cakebread's rare and coveted Benchland Select Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - limited.
94+ Points Robert Parker: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is a stunner. Aged 22 months in 54% new French oak, the wine has a dense, blackish/blue color, a beautiful nose of graphite, blackberry, blueberry, a touch of charcoal embers and spice. It’s youthful, restrained and holding back somewhat. Nevertheless, this is a super-impressive wine that will age effortlessly for 25-30 years. In fact, I don’t think it’s going to hit its peak for another 5-7 years. This is a beauty."
