Rare Reserve Cabernet release from Turnbull.
96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina Vineyard is powerful and heady, with all of the intensity that is typical of this site on the eastern hills of Oakville. Dark, savory and powerful, the 2017 has so much to offer. The balance of intense dark fruit and muscular tannins makes for an absolutely compelling Cabernet."
Situated atop the Oakville Bench, the Leopoldina Vinyard offers its westward-facing vines rocky, red volcanic soils and dramatic inclines - the ideal terroir for producing wines that flow with aromatic intrigue and unparalleled freshness.
95 Points Parker
A fantastic 2018 Napa Cabernet from Turnbull Cellars. Highly recommended.
95 Points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a blockbuster of a wine, especially at the price, opening in violet aromas and moderate grip. Beautiful black- and red-cherry, cur rant and baking-spice elements combine around a core of classic elegance and length, finishing in cigar box. The fruit is from four estate sites. Consider buying caseloads.”
93 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The appellation 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley would be a great buy for those looking for a terrific value in classic, impeccably made, age-worthy Cabernet under $100. Deep purple, with oustanding notes of blackcurrants, cedarwood, graphite, and leafy herbs, this medium-bodied, elegant 2018 has plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's going to deliver loads of pleasure over the coming 15 years."
93 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "Turnbull's Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is absolutely gorgeous. Ripe, bold and plummy, with bright floral overtones and succulent red berry and plum fruit, the Turnbull Napa Valley Cabernet is a positively stellar wine. Best of all, it is a screaming value by the standards of Napa Valley Cabernet. Is there a better Napa Valley Cabernet made from estate fruit for $50 a bottle? I doubt it."
Made from all estate fruit from the Fortuna, Leopoldina, and Amoenus Vineyards, the Turnbull 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet is a great introduction to the Turnbull Winery. Winemaker Peter Heitz is garnering great acclaim for the work he's been doing at this small production facility, and it shows in this bottle. Of the vintage, Heitz says: “This wine captures the essence of where we farm in the Napa Valley. A wine of integrity, it’s a blend that we make to share at our own family table. A quintessential dirt to bottle wine that’s approachable at release and downright delicious."
Robert Parker: "...Readers should check out Turnbull Wine Cellars without delay."
98+ points - limited
Turnbull's flagship reserve Cabernet. Limited.
98+ Points Robert Parker: "Deep garnet-purple in color, the Turnbull 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is just a little reticent at this youthful stage. With a little swirling and coaxing, it begins to reveal a staggeringly beautiful nose of warm cassis, boysenberries, black raspberries and dark chocolate, with hints of freshly cut red roses, cinnamon stick, cedar chest and pencil lead plus a waft of fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is super intense, featuring tightly wound layers of black fruits, minerals and baking spices, supported by a rock-solid frame of pixelated tannins and electric freshness, finishing long and fantastically fragrant. What a stunner!"
98 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are 47 barrels of the flagship Turnbull 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label, a selection from Oakville that shows the vintage style beautifully. A wonderful perfume of crème de cassis, chocolate, lead pencil, and violets gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated, expansive Cabernet with wonderful, velvety tannins, a dense, layered mid-palate, and a great finish. This broad, sexy, seamless 2018 can be drunk today with incredible pleasure, but it’s going to age like a great 1982 Bordeaux and keep for 30+ years."
97 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Turnbull 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is fabulous. Inky, deep and powerful, the Black Label has so much to offer. Crème de cassis, graphite, new leather, cedar, mint, spice and lavender all run through this full-bodied, unctuous Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The Black Label pushes all the right buttons. It is a tremendous wine in every way. I loved it. The blend is 87% Leopoldina and 13% Fortuna.
Turnbull Cellars has been on a spectacular roll of quality over the last five to six years, if not longer. These are some of the most compelling wines being made in Northern California. Readers should take that to heart. By and large the Turnbull 2014s tended to perform in a slightly more backward style than many wines of the vintage, so some minimal bottle aging is suggested. However, they are all impressive wines that combine plenty of power with impressive elegance and equilibrium."
Inaugural Reserve Cabernet release from Turnbull.
96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Turnbull 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve is another dazzling wine that overdelivers for its price point. Rich and sumptuous, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, spice and cedar are all fused together in this dazzling, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon; all the elements meld together in an effortless, flamboyant wine. This is a total pleasure bomb - for its quality and price, there is no question: the Reserve is the wine to buy at Turnbull."
The fruit for Turnbull's 2016 Oakville Reserve bottling comes entirely from the Fortuna and Leopoldina Vineyards. Located in Eastern Oakville, these sites are situated upon the famous volcanic red soils that the Oakville appellation is known for. The Fortuna Vineyard sits proudly on the alluvial fan at the base of the Oakville bench, and contributing red fruit and spice components. The Leopoldina Vineyard, high on the bedrock ridge above the Fortuna Vineyard, highlights structure, texture, and mid-palate weight.
