Limited new release from Shafer!
95+ Points Robert Parker: "Blended of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, the deep purple-black colored 2015 Relentless has a total rock-star nose of flamboyant blackberry pie, plum preserves, mulberries and licorice scents with hints of Sichuan pepper, hoisin, Indian spices and smoked meats plus a waft of raspberry leaves. Very big, rich, full and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate packs in black fruits and exotic spices layers with a firm, rounded tannin frame and just enough freshness to carry off the long, opulent finish."
previous vintage 96 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Checking in as a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Petit Sirah, the Syrah Relentless is a killer bottle of wine that offers decadent notes of blackcurrants, barbecued meats, seaweed wrapper, lavender, exotic pepper, and liquid smoke. This is a rich, unctuous Rhône inspired blend that packs serious amounts of fruit and richness, yet the elegant, forward style of the vintage keeps it silky, polished and incredibly drinkable. While I haven't had every vintage of this cuvee (it was first made in 1999), my money is on this being up with the top handful of vintages. It's a blockbuster today (if you’re oak adverse, give bottles 2-3 years) but will keep for two decades."
previous vintage 95 Points Antonio Galloni: "Shafer's 2014 Relentless is fabulous. The most expressive and varietally expressive of the three vintages of Relentless I tasted. In 2014, Relentless has 11% Petite Sirah, which, along with the personality of the year, kicks up the aromatics and flavors in a meaningful way. Lavender, mint, violets and crème de cassis notes are laced into the super-expressive finish. The 2014 is shaping up to be a real gem."
Robert Parker: "...Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of Stags Leap of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity. Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfect as can be."
Brand new white release from the famed winemaking duo of Shafer Vineyards Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez and their new label Eight Four. Limited.
95 Points Wine Enthusiast "Editor's Choice": "This new project of Elias Fernandez and Doug Shafer, of Shafer Vineyards, continues to impress with this standout variety, sourced from Carneros, where the duo planted four acres of the variety a few years back. It's achingly pretty and substantive - exotic, complex and lingering, with sizzling acidity. Peach and honeysuckle stand out , while the texture is so sublime, you'll simply want more."
Winery Notes: The whole reason Eighty Four Wines exists is to explore what Napa Valley can produce with newcomer grape varieties. Albariño has been at the top of our list since the beginning. We love the clean acidity and the direct purity of the wines from Spain and wanted to see what the grape would do here. In 2012 we planted four acres in Napa Valley’s Carneros District and this is our first harvest. We gave it just four months on the lees in stainless steel barrels — no oak, no malolactic fermentation – so that the resulting wine would be fruity and refreshing. We’re pleased with the result and hope you are too.
Winemaker Elias Fernandez: “This is springtime in a bottle. The aromas and flavors are silky, sunny citrus blossom, white peach, honeysuckle, and dried apricot with a touch of lavender. Thanks to the lively acidity and austere minerality this abundance of fruit is clean and energetic from start to finish.

Shafer's Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay is one of California's finest examples of this varietal - don't miss it while it's available.
94 Points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a perennially impressive wine, floral in a heady perfume of white roses. Fresh and fleshy, the expansive palate offers concentrated flavors of kiwi and pineapple. The wine was largely fermented in oak, then aged just over a year in French oak (75% new). It holds the oak well, ending bright in juicy acidity."
previous vintage 93 Points Robert Parker: "First, their non-malolactic 2014 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch comes from a cool-climate vineyard in Carneros. This is aged in 75% oak casks and 25% stainless steel, which seems to be the perfect marriage for showcasing this wine’s rich fruit. The wine has loads of tangerine oil, citrus blossom, a hint of apples and orange marmalade. The oak is subtle, the wine medium to full-bodied, pure and rich. (This is the official tasting note, but I shared two bottles with some friends of mine at the casual Market restaurant in St. Helena, and it was a huge hit.)"
“…one of the best non-malolactic, barrel-fermented Chardonnays in California …”
The Wine Advocate
Shafer makes one of California's finest Merlots. This was another in a string of warm, sun-soaked vintages from spring through early autumn. The consistency of daytime heat and evening coolness created a model growing season in which we harvested fruit with abundant color and concentration, along with enticing, rich aromatics.
92 Points Robert Parker: "Shafer also makes one of the better Merlots. The 2014 Merlot includes 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and is a beauty. Mocha and chocolaty notes intermixed with red cherry, plum and blacker fruits jump from the glass of this perfumed and fragrant style of Merlot. It is medium to full-bodied, exceptionally pure and rich and should drink beautifully over the next 10-12 years of life."
