Seavey Vineyards 2013 'Caravina' Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

92 Points - great buy
Robert Parker has called Caravina, "perhaps the best second wine in all of Napa Valley", and we agree.  One of the best Cabs under $60 we've found.

2013 marks Seavey Vineyard’s 16th vintage of estate-produced Caravina Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a unique tapestry of steep hillside blocks all from the estate vineyard.  Warm aromas from a dark fruit galette of plum and blackberry, gently wrapped in a waft of rose petals, resonate in the mouth. Neither opulent nor heavy, but revealing lively concentration and intensity, this wine exemplifies the savoriness of this unique growing season—a special profile that is unlikely to be repeated. The texture of this wine is soft, with an intriguing long-lived finish that reveals this wine’s subtle complexity and harmony. This wine is ideal for drinking now or over the next 5-10 years.

95+ Points Robert Parker: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 97.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in new French oak and is typically young, backward and for serious connoisseurs to stow away for at least 5-8 years prior to consumption. The 2013 is typically coiled, deep purple in color, with notes of burning embers, créme de cassis, a touch of earth, spice and tobacco leaf. It is full-bodied, moderately tannic and needs to be respected in terms of it not providing a whole lot of pleasure for another 5-8 years....This estate, tucked away in Conn Valley behind the famous Meadowood Resort, still remains somewhat under-the-radar. Big, rich, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignons have been produced at Seavey since the early 1990s. French consultant Philippe Melka has done a fabulous job getting the tannins under control, and since he has been in charge, the wines are consistently brilliant."
