94 Points - great new release
A fantastic new Chardonnay discovery from the true Sonoma Coast! If you like Flowers, Marcassin or Kistler you should add Fort Ross to that list of great Chardonnay producers. One of our favorite new Califorina wineries.
94 Points Robert Parker: "The 2014 Chardonnay Fort Ross Vineyard is a beauty. It spent 10 months in 30% new French oak (785 cases) and shows notes of crushed wet rock, crisp orange blossom, white currant and discrete oak. Some poached pear also makes an impression in this unfined and unfiltered Chardonnay that should drink nicely for 5 to 7 years...
...This small operation boasts Jeff Pisoni as the winemaker and is owned by Lester and Linda Schwartz. They began planting their 55-acre vineyard in 1994, with the first vintage in 2000. The wines are all bottled unfined and unfiltered, with the Chardonnay coming from Old Hyde and Wente field selections. The Pinot Noir is generally an assemblage of clones such as Calera, Pommard, Swan and Dijon 115 and 777. These are impressive Burgundian-style Pinot Noirs that merit serious attention. These are all impressive wines sold at extremely fair prices."
Fort Ross Winery is nestled on a sunny coastal ridge, overlooking the Pacific Ocean a mile below. Their “True Sonoma Coast” vineyard is one of the closest, if not the closest, to the ocean in all of California. This is a great Chardonnay if you are looking for a style somwhere between the over-oaked and the steely style. It's all about the gorgeous fruit in this one, Highly recommended.
A new great-value Napa Chardonnay from the folks at PlumpJack's Odette Estate. Limited.
An approachable fun interpretation to Napa Valley Chardonnay! Aromas of citrus, tropical fruit, and acacia flower. On the palate flavors of green apple, guava, and quince, backed by refreshing acidity and a pleasing finish. We are proud to produce Chardonnay that we feel is a great representation of the broader Napa AVA.
North is the new label from the Central Coast Rhone Master John Alban. Extremely limited.
95 Points Robert Parker: "The greatest Chardonnay yet from Alban, his 2013 Chardonnay had just been bottled prior to my visit. It certainly was showing no ill affects and offers sensational, Montrachet-like notes of ripe apple and orchard fruits, toasted nuts, mineral and cream. Full-bodied, ripe, voluptuous and layered, it's a shame more producers don't attempt this style and settle for a mid-weight, overly acidity, more innocuous expression of the variety. Drink this beautiful wine anytime over the coming decade...These Pinots and Chardonnays all come from John Alban's estate in the Edna Valley. Without a doubt, these 2013s are the greatest I've tasted from him."."
Limited new release from cult Chardonnay producer Mark Aubert.
94 Points Robert Parker: "The 2013 Chardonnay UV-SL is made from two selections of Old Wente Chardonnay clones planted in classic Goldridge sandy soils. It exhibits the same greenish hue as its siblings, but is slightly more restrained and subdued. Notes of white currants, quince, poached pears, wet rocks and loamy soil nuances emerge from this terroir-driven Chardonnay. Drink 2015-2014...
...Mark Aubert is one of the contenders for California’s finest practitioner of Burgundian-styled, yet classic, California Chardonnays. His offerings are all made like grand cru Burgundies with full malolactic, the use of French oak and lees stirring, but the purity of fruit, the textural dimensions, and the stunning singularity of these Chardonnays can only be matched by a handful of other Chardonnay producers in the world. He’s that good. Aubert’s 2012s, which I have enjoyed multiple times out of bottle since I purchased most of them, merit the scores I gave them last year."
