A delicious Zinfandel from Adelaida, one of Paso Roble's best producers.

The 2019 Adelaida District Zinfandel has a deep ruby color pleases the eye as the glass is lifted. Exuberant full tilt wafts of raspberry and blueberry pie hit first, underpinned by exotic spice aromas of nutmeg and mace. Vanilla bean and peppercorn round out the classic array of Zinfandel scents. In the mouth the wine is both rich, round, and resolute in its forthrightness, being a true expression of grape and location. These west Paso Robles, Adelaida District vineyards deliver a strikingly flamboyant and showy Zinfandel while also maintaining beautiful purity, balance, and finesse, which can be attributed to the rare limestone-based soils. Overall a wine of fun and style, offering plenty of classic blue and black fruit with a racy and juicy mouthfeel.

Heaton Ranch is a 130 acre family Estate in the Willow Creek sub AVA of Paso Robles.  Their Zinfandel block, established in 2004, is dry farmed in traditional “bush vine” style on chalk rock soils. Prized as a source of high-quality grapes, this grower/farmer has a waiting list of clients. Adelaida was fortunate to acquire this fruit in a year where we experienced a reduced crop from our own Michael’s Estate vineyard. Dry land farming is a labor intensive soil tillage technique which involves breaking up (disking) the soil, using the winter cover crop as a natural fertilizer followed by rolling and light compaction to maintain natural moisture. Lacking irrigation, vines search deep into the soil crevices for sustenance at the expense of quantity. Fruit concentration is maximized from the resulting small grapes with higher skin to juice ratios.
