96 points - limited
Turnbull's flagship reserve Cabernet. Limited.
96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is built around a core of fruit from Leopoldina, with about 30% of the fruit from Fortuna. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather and spice build in a potent, explosive Cabernet that hits all the right notes. In 2019, the Black Label is a real head turner. The flamboyant style offers tons of immediacy that will make the 2019 pretty hard to resist right out of the gate."
96 Points Wine Enthusiast: "A barrel-selection of the vintage, this wine stuns in its dynamic of power and elegance, revealing layers of dried herb, sage and violet around a core of seamless tannin. Dark chocolate, graphite and cassis are met by an undercurrent of darker berry and oak spice, with a refined, structured finish. This will do well in the cellar; enjoy best 2029–2039."
95 Points Robert Parker: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label needs swirling to reveal notes of blackcurrant jelly, blackberry preserves and boysenberries, plus hints of cedar, lilacs, unsmoked cigars and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is delicately styled and refreshing, featuring elegant layers and a long and mineral-laced finish."
95 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The deep purple-hued 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label is another beauty that just screams “Oakville” with its darker currants, tobacco, black olive, and iron-laced aromas and flavors. Full-bodied on the palate, it has good acidity, a classic, focused mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has 20-25 years of prime drinking."
Turnbull Cellars has been on a spectacular roll of quality over the last five to six years, if not longer. These are some of the most compelling wines being made in Northern California. Readers should take that to heart. By and large the Turnbull 2014s tended to perform in a slightly more backward style than many wines of the vintage, so some minimal bottle aging is suggested. However, they are all impressive wines that combine plenty of power with impressive elegance and equilibrium."
Rare Reserve Cabernet release from Turnbull.
96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina Vineyard is a real stunner. Silky, perfumed and exquisitely beautiful, the 2019 captivates all the sense with its striking beauty and magnificent balance. Blood orange, pomegranate, sweet red cherry, mint and wild flowers all soar out of the glass. The aromatics alone are so alluring. In 2019, the Leopoldina is a bit eccentric, but it is also incredibly captivating."
Situated atop the Oakville Bench, the Leopoldina Vinyard offers its westward-facing vines rocky, red volcanic soils and dramatic inclines - the ideal terroir for producing wines that flow with aromatic intrigue and unparalleled freshness.
New vintage of the rare Reserve Cabernet release from Turnbull.
97 Points Wine Enthusiast "Editor's Choice": "This is such a well-balanced and elegant take on the variety, floral, earthy, and gentle on the palate. Currant, cassis and raspberry flavors highlight a lovely texture of subtle power that is inviting and brightly high-toned. Volcanic soils contribute a chalky, spicy and mineral-like compon of crushed rock."
95 Points Wine Spectator: "Delivers a lovely burst of pure, unadulterated cassis and cherry puree, with hints of violet, singed vanilla, loam and anise. A subtly inlaid graphite spine carries the finish. Beautifully proportioned. Accessible now, but there's no rush at all. Drink now through 2036."
94 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "A killer value that’s up with the best at the price point, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve offers medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of currants, plums, chocolate, iron, and a touch of tobacco. Nicely concentrated, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it’s a terrific wine well worth seeking out. Drink bottles over the coming 10-12 years or so."
The fruit for Turnbull's 2019 Oakville Reserve bottling comes entirely from the Fortuna and Leopoldina Vineyards. Located in Eastern Oakville, these sites are situated upon the famous volcanic red soils that the Oakville appellation is known for. The Fortuna Vineyard sits proudly on the alluvial fan at the base of the Oakville bench, and contributing red fruit and spice components. The Leopoldina Vineyard, high on the bedrock ridge above the Fortuna Vineyard, highlights structure, texture, and mid-palate weight.

A fantastic Napa Cabernet from Turnbull Cellars. Highly recommended.
90 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is deep, fleshy and a real delight. Inky dark fruit, cloves, licorice, lavender and chocolate are all kicked up in this juicy, flamboyant Napa Valley Cabernet. Pretty floral and savory notes perk up the finish. The Napa Valley Cabernet is gorgeous in 2019. Even better, it should be a tremendous value."
Made from all estate fruit from the Fortuna, Leopoldina, and Amoenus Vineyards, the Turnbull Napa Valley Cabernet is a great introduction to the Turnbull Winery. Winemaker Peter Heitz is garnering great acclaim for the work he's been doing at this small production facility, and it shows in this bottle. Of the vintage, Heitz says: “This wine captures the essence of where we farm in the Napa Valley. A wine of integrity, it’s a blend that we make to share at our own family table. A quintessential dirt to bottle wine that’s approachable at release and downright delicious."
Robert Parker: "...Readers should check out Turnbull Wine Cellars without delay."
