The high altitude rocky vineyard sites in Lake County deliver angularity, complexity and austerity while the Napa Valley fruit provides deep concentration and focus.Ā Ā This wine is dense and tremendously focused, with a wonderful nose and palate of cedar, blueberry, saddle leather and white pepper. "There was big-time sorting this vintage and a lot of selection before we even picked," John Alban says. Brix26 Inside Scoop:Ā Intermittently, Alban Vineyards produced a 'Central Coast Syrah' which was never predictable in either when it was made or its quantity but was always tremendously popular.Ā With each sporadic release, it became undeniable that lots of people wanted this wine. Likewise, it became painfully clear to Alban that without control of the vineyards from which this wine would derive, nothing about it would ever be reliable.Ā In 2005, Alban discontinued purchasing grapes for the Central Coast Syrah to develop his own vineyards and the 'Patrina' Syrah was born.

With air the 2019 shows gorgeous depth and captivating inner perfume, even if it is clearly still coming together. The 2019 spent about 14 months in oak, with 50% new wood. It had previously been an apple orchard but has since been planted to mostly Hyde Clone Chardonnay with a little Montrachet clone. It is located on the Sonoma Coast, conveniently situated right in between Aubert's Lauren and CIX vineyards. The vineyard has a long road leading up to the property, hence the name "Park Avenue." Note that the previous two vintages from this vineyard were declassified into the AVA wine. A barrel sample, the Chardonnay Park Avenue leaps out of the glass with provocative notes of white peaches, fresh pears, lemon curd and chalk dust plus spicy hints of coriander seed, nutmeg and white pepper. Despite plenty of new French oak in the Ć©levage, there's only a faintly fumĆ©, crushed-stone character on the nose, which nicely sets off the wine's white peach and lime notes. Full-bodied and generous but sturdily built, with an imposing structure, the 2021 Chardonnay Eastside is powerful and long on the finish. The crop was virtually wiped out by a spring frost in 2020, but the vines rebounded in 2021, yielding 1,400 cases."

98 Points Robert Parker:Ā "The Aubert 2021 Chardonnay UV-SL comes from largely Goldridge soils in parcels owned and managed by the Valdez family (UV being the initials of Ulises Valdez, Aubert's frequent vineyard collaborator, who died in 2018). There are 2,000 cases of this elixir, which offers up classic notes of toasted hazelnuts, white peaches and citrus zest. It's full-bodied, rich and opulent yet contained and controlled, with great silky length and energy. Aubert describes the oak thusly: "The oak is perfect. It just kisses you with a bit of vanilla and cookie dough." The wine is certainly delicious, and thinking back on it, I wonder if my rating is a bit conservative."

The Bedrock 2016 Heritage Red from the Evanghelho Vineyard in Contra Costa County truly embodies Bedrock is all about. This wine is a "field blend" made from 22 different varietals from vines that were planted 123 years ago. Winemaker Morgan Peterson has gone through and identified every vine on the property by hand. The main component is Zinfandel, with the remaining 40% of the wine a blend of what has been planted in the vineyard for the past century. Peppery fruit is in the lead with this wine, followed by plums and cloves. It is a very dark and textured wine, chewy and dense. This wine has so much history in each glass. If you are a fan of the tradition and history of wine, this is something to be tried and shared with friends.Ā

This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There's plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There's a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine's nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock vineyard, and I say that as someone who is not yet fully convinced of the potential here."

Winery notes: Crazy to think this is the 15th bottling we have made of this wine! The 1888 plantings at our home ranch produced very small amounts of dense, rich fruit in 2021 that will make this one of the greatest Bedrock Heritage Wines we have made. The wonderfully even growing season and cool August allowed sugars to accumulate slowly and natural acidity to remain bright, making for a classically composed expression of our Sonoma Valley site. As always, this is a field-blend of over 20 different varieties interplanted on the iron-rich, red and cobbly soils of our home ranch. This vineyard is the gravitational center of everything else we do at Bedrock - it is the vineyard we walk with our families in, it is where we have learned via trial and error how to farm. previous vintage 94+ Point Robert Parker:Ā "The Behrens Cabernet Sauvignon the Collector, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Petite Sirah and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, reminds me of a big, rich Petite Sirah. That explains the 30% of that variety, but it seems to dominate the blend. Beautiful blueberry and black raspberry fruit, extremely extracted and rich, but not rustic by any means, this is a big, dense, pedal-to-the-metal, balls-to-the-wall black/purple red wine to drink over the next 20-25 years."
Behrens Family The Collector is back with a brand new label, and the 2013 edition is an intriguing blend of Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of tobacco and loam meld with vanilla, cherry and black fruits. There is a lush and savory quality to this wine that is focused with great acidity and expands with a mouthful of black currant, allspice and cassis. Beringer's Private Reserve Chardonnay is primarily sourced from their Gamble Ranch property in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. Each lot was kept separate from harvest all the way through the winemaking process. The wine was aged for 9 months in 88% new French oak with full malolactic fermentation, and the lees were stirred weekly to enrich the texture and profile. Only the finest lots were then selected for inclusion in this Private Reserve bottling. From winemaker Laurie Hook: "Aromas of hazelnut and grilled pineapple are followed by flavors of lush, tropical fruits, balanced by a hint of citrus. A rich, creamy mouthfeel is rounded out by a lengthy, elegant finish.
