Peter Mathis is Director of Winemaking at Ravenswood, but he has a side project from a small estate in Sonoma County where he produces 500 cases of Grenache that tastes like a California version of a top Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Highly recommended.
Mathis planted his 7.5 acre hillside vineyard in the Sonoma Valley in 1999 with Grenache, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouche. The field blend was chosen to produce wine styled after classic wines from the Rhone Valley. After the hard work of clearing, planting and tending the vineyard as well as producing the wine, Peter is proud to present his inaugural release of 2004 Mathis Grenache. Juicy and delicious, the aroma is dominated by ripe black cherries and dried cranberries, followed by a spice kissed apricot, pomegranate, blackberry and strawberries in the mouth. The ’04 Mathis Grenache is immediately easy to appreciate but rewards those who allow for some breathing time.
